My Bag o' Crap Moment

I wrote recently and more recently about the clever promotion that BigPockets.co.uk was running to help clear out the slow moving stock from its warehouses. When the chance came up for me to order my own Bag o' Crap (or Bag o' Crap 2 to be precise) I didn't hesitate. The mystery package arrived yesterday. Here's the moment my son and I discovered what was inside.

Elf Yourself - this year's viral hit

I'm sure you've seen this by now. Office Max has re-released its popular Elf Yourself microsite where you can upload photos of up to four people to generate a personalised dancing elves online message. Give it a try, it's great fun. For the more miserable amongst you, also from Office Max is the Scrooge Yourself microsite.

Hats off to Office Max for enjoying so much success from these two microsites. According to Hitwise, Elf Yourself received 0.12% of all web traffic in the week ending 8th December. That's one heck of a lot of visitors!

The roots of successful viral marketing lie in the quality of the idea and the creative execution. Office Max, a US retailer of office supplies, has resisted the urge most marketers feel to put their brand centre stage. Instead, they've produced some really lovely creative that's subtly branded, yet still deposits the viewer on a compelling offers page that should in turn generate sales revenue for the promoter. Last year's Elf Yourself microsite got a whopping 36 million hits in just five weeks. This year's microsite seems even more popular. Well done Office Max!

Harebrained online marketing

Hot on the heels of the www.milliondollarhomepage.com comes, yes, you guessed it, www.milliondollarpubes.com. For just $2 per pixel (sold in blocks of 10x10 pixels = $200) you can now buy your place in pubic hair history.

As at today 191 nutters have each shelled out $200 for the privilege and even received their complimentary pubic hair in return. The money raised will supposedly be used to fund laser hair removal surgery for the mystery (and presumably very hairy) woman behind this hair-raising scheme.

Whatever next? www.milliondollarearwax.com? www.milliondollarbogey.com? www.milliondollarbodyparts.com? The mind boggles...

Not mobile living

I don't normally post things like this, but every so often something silly like this comes through email and makes me chuckle. Click on the photo below. These workmen have done a great job of putting up bollards to stop vehicles parking on the pavement. There's one small detail they seem to have forgotten though.

You couldn't make it up!
